Engineers

There are many types of Consulting Engineers who engage in a wide range of activity, this is usually aimed at problem solving or the design and specification of various products involved in construction. Broadly speaking Engineers can be involved in any of the following areas, chemical, electrical, mechanical, structural, geotechnical and soil.

There are several regulatory bodies that may require their members to take out Professional Indemnity Insurance cover:

  • The Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE)
  • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
  • The Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME)

Cavendish Munro understand that in many instances Engineers may well be required to take out Professional Indemnity Insurance cover as part of their contractual requirements when taking on work which may involve collateral warranty agreements.

Collateral warranties /duty of care agreements
The good professional Indemnity Insurers will accept claims resulting from sensibly worded agreements, these are generally standard formats which will also relate to most construction based professions including Surveyors and Architects. In certain cases the claimant is not actually the insured's client this situation can sometimes occur in design and build jobs; this has led to the inclusion of collateral warranty and duty of care agreements that sit alongside the main contract.

It is clearly of vital importance that you do not agree to contracts of an unreasonable or onerous nature that leaves your practice with little or no protection should something go wrong. Our specialists at Cavendish Munro can advise you from an insurance perspective on how best to deal with these agreements and negotiate on your behalf with insurers to obtain the best possible cover.
